De Renzo Durrett is a small, locally owned law firm, with all female attorneys. We work incredibly hard to represent our clients and ensure that their rights are protected and their goals accomplished. We handle cases in family law, divorce, custody, visitation, child support, misdemeanor charges, DUI, traffic tickets, personal injury, slip and fall, and car accidents.

I could not be more proud to work for this AMAZING law firm!! I was truly blessed when I started working for them three years ago. I can’t wait to see what the future holds,  as I begin expanding into same sex family law, (domestic partnership contracts, same sex adoptions, estate planning) and we all continue to grow!!

I was reminded of this lesson Thursday of this week, and then I had to laugh at how often it could really be applied! Since I am STILL waiting for my bar results, I don’t always have to go in to De Renzo Durrett. . . so I took this break from the law to go and meet up with my little sister for a picnic. It was amazing weather, I LOVE FALL! And the park was perfect. . .after lunch we went on a hike, on what was marked as a trail. This ‘boyscout’ trail obviously wasn’t used too often, and as we walked through the overgrown, downhill, muddy “path” we both started to laugh. This is when Lauren reminded me of the great lesson, to laugh when things don’t go as planned.

At the end of the trail was a historic house that we were going to walk through, but it was closed for a “historic re-wallpapering party.” We once again busted out laughing. Maybe the better lesson is sometimes, things in life are closed for “historic re-wallpapering parties.”

I also had to laugh a little when I started to apply this to everyday life. As the city of Louisville scrambled this week to find different routes to work, or entertaining ways to kill time in traffic, due to the closure of the bridge, I couldn’t help but laugh at the fact that building another bridge years ago may have prevented what has turned out to be on giant nightmare for the city.

In the end, the lesson is an important one for anyone’s sanity and overall happiness in life. Life comes with all types of surprises and changes. . . so whether it is a rough hiking trail, a wall paper party, divorce, a car accident, a bad grade, a missed appointment, or a closed bridge and traffic, try to make the best of it, and find the humor.

My heart and thoughts are with all those truly impacted by todays earthquake!!

Well, it is my second week back at work. . starting what is essentially my job as a lawyer, although I still have to wait to hear that I pass the bar in October before it is official. I am loving work so far! I have missed being around all of the incredible women in my office and De Renzo Durrett!! I posted (or at least tried) some pictures of my office!!!

I had my first meeting of the Fairness Campaign Coordinating Committee last night, and It was so great to begin working with other amazing LGBTQ activists! It has me so excited to get more involved, and got me even more amped up about starting into same-sex family law and working on LGBTQ issues after I get my official license.

It has been really weird not preparing to go back to class, and start a new school year. For the last 19 years I have been in school. It is weird, but incredibly exciting to be starting into this new phase of life.

I  intend to use this as a source for updating current changes and evolutions in the areas of same-sex and LGBTQ law. But mostly, I intend to use this blog to chronicle the lessons that I learn in life, every day. They will not always be profound, but some may be. . . They may not always be happy, but I’m guessing a lot of them will be funny! I may not even get to post one everyday, but it is my hope that I learn SOMETHING every day, and I will try to share it with anyone who is following!!

Today’s lesson is simple – Lesson #1: “Life is yours, live it your way.”
